Burn More Than 700 Calories Doing This Winter Sport

Are you sick and tired of spending all winter doing your cardio training inside? In the summer you can get outside and hit trials on a mountain bike or go running. Winter smacks you in the face with snow and practically immobilizes you.

Lucky for you, there are other options out there. Have you thought about trying cross-country skiing? Unlike Alpine skiing, where you fly down slopes, cross-country skiing is done on flat surfaces.

Nope, skiing is not just for dudes who compete at the Olympics— the average joe can do it too. Make no mistake, it’s not going to be easy, but isn’t that kind of the point? Check out the benefits this winter sport has for your body:

It Will Get Your Heart Rate Up

According to Men's Heath, skiing will make you absolutely shredded. Okay, well, you need to put the work in, but if you do, then you can burn as much 735 calories in an hour.

It's A Total Body Workout

Unlike other cardio exercises such as running and biking, skiing works your whole body at once. It engages your core, your legs, and your arms all at once, ensuring that you'll be worn out by the end of your workout.

It Improves Balance

You will constantly be switching your weight distribution in order to not fall over. It's kind of like paddle boarding in that aspect, except falling into a pile of snow is a lot more of a shock to the system than falling into warm water.

Equipment: What You Need To Get Started

You don't need a ton of stuff to get out there and practice this sport. There are a couple of essential things, though. These include: skis (duh), boots, ski poles, and proper winter clothing.

REI has a nice, in-depth article that explains exactly what you should buy and why. It's a great read if you plan on not perishing while trying to get in your cardio hours.
